if you're a Chance stan like me, you know those lyrics are from The Big Day, the self-titled single from his most recent (and critically-lambasted) album.
i've been meditating on these lyrics for over a year now. what does he mean when he says that to survive one must go crazy? it's one of the rare times I've found myself underwhelmed with the Rap Genius page for a Chance song. he is one of the Rap Genius OGs after all. "Genius", as it's called now, is one of my favorite products/projects of all time. what an ambitious vision - a modern-day Talmud. the founders also happen to be some of the most irreverent and sharp-witted guys i've come across while studying the Silicon Valley scene over the past several years. but that's neither here nor there.
in any event, i think i've landed on something that resonates with me for now. it's about burning bridges and never looking back - in true Abrahamic fashion. it's about recognizing, understanding, accepting and rejecting the wholesale expectations of the "real world" in favor of personal peace and freedom in realms that transcend time and space. there's no going halfway with it. and, one is guaranteed to look "crazy" in the process.
i suppose the freedom in going "crazy" comes at least in part from the fact that folks stop expecting much from you - at least in ordinary social terms. perhaps that space allows one an opening to slow down and go within without the critical gaze of an expectant "real world" audience. and, perhaps that journey inwards, holds the key to survival.
anyway, i'm waiting for chance to update the Genius page with the answer.
