digital societies.

my mind keeps returning to this idea lately.
what's the meaning of "society" anyway? distill it down to its core essence. here's a shot: it's just a collection of people who've come together to agree to agree upon a set of rules by which to live in harmony among one another, potentially towards some collective goal.
the world's most expansive and consequential societies today are our nation-states. nation-states defend and accrete power through coercion (or threat thereof) and "strategic resource development."
tomorrow's most expansive and consequential societies will be global digital communities (think decentralized autonomous organizations). global digital communities accrete and expand influence by providing ongoing and verifiable value to their participants and inspiring organic flywheel growth through mutual benefit/buy-in and inspired promotion (network effects).
this paradigm shift gives people all over the world the power to essentially digitally forum-shop for the "society" or "societies" that most suit their values and preferred lifestyle.
these two worlds can exist harmoniously together, but they will each yield in ways.
term of the day: country. what would the features of "digital country" even be?
song of the day: "I Do" by John Legend. this guy pretty much never misses.
