black people sh*t

these are some pictures of me and the family at a local state park over the weekend. our trip didn't cost us a penny, other than the price of gas.
i'm really grateful to be free from this idea that used to hold me hostage. it was the idea that some of the most awesome, beautiful and enjoyable things that this world have to offer, are somehow exclusively "white people sh*t." i thought hiking, camping, canoeing, skiing, sailing, mountain biking, recycling, meditating, doing yoga, etc. were things only white people did (with their abundance of free time). i was SO WRONG. i know that all (maybe not even most) black people think the way i did, but enough do. this is a TRIP we can escape, if we're intentional about it.
who taught me that? why did i believe it for so long? i love walking through nature (hiking), i love being one with the outdoors and God while enjoying the adventure of spartan shelter and whole foods for a night (camping). i love fending for myself in a small and fast-moving boat on a swiftly moving river (canoeing). the idea of flying down a snowy mountain on a bright sunny day with my best friends and family, sounds positively delightful (skiiing). i love the freedom of standing on deck as the wind blows through my clothes and i attempt to straighten the mast on my tiny boat in the vast Atlantic ocean (sailing). i love the ruggedness of a remote and hilly park, just me my bike and the wondrous world of Tidal streaming through my ears as i explore hills untrodden (mountain biking). you're starting to get the point. i LOVE these things, and i'm unquestionably BLACK. maybe these aren't just for white people after all...maybe it's black people sh*t, too. maybe it's human shit. for all of us to enjoy in abundance.
either way, i'm grateful for it all. and so happy to have my eyes open to the beauty of all these things i now get to enjoy without shame or embarrassment. how about that for black people sh*t?
